How to install a Triangle Car Rooftop Tent

2025-05-14

Installing a triangle car rooftop tent (also known as a hard-shell or wedge-style rooftop tent) involves securely attaching it to your vehicle’s roof rack or crossbars. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

What You’ll Need:

Triangle rooftop tent

Vehicle with crossbars or a roof rack (must support weight limits)

Mounting hardware (usually included with the tent)

Wrenches or socket set

Ladder or helper (tent can be heavy)

Torque wrench (optional but recommended)

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1. Prepare the Roof Rack

Ensure your roof rack or crossbars are compatible with the tent’s mounting system.

Check the weight limits of your vehicle’s roof and rack (dynamic vs. static loads).

2. Unbox the Tent

Place it on a flat surface and remove all packaging.

Locate the mounting hardware and instructions provided by the manufacturer.

3. Position the Tent

With help, lift the tent onto the roof of the vehicle.

Position it centrally and evenly across the crossbars.

Most triangle tents can open to the side or rear. Choose the orientation you prefer.

4. Attach Mounting Brackets

Slide the mounting rails or brackets under the crossbars.

Align the tent’s mounting points with the crossbars.

Insert the bolts through the mounting plates and into the tent’s base.

Tighten bolts evenly but do not over-tighten.

5. Double-Check All Connections

Make sure everything is secure and torqued to spec (refer to the manufacturer’s manual).

Check that the tent doesn’t shift when pushed.

6. Test Opening and Closing

Open the tent to ensure it opens smoothly and doesn’t interfere with your roof or vehicle.

Check that the ladder is stable and the interior is flat and secure.

7. Secure Any Accessories

Install the ladder, mattress, or storage pockets if included.

Important Tips

Most triangle tents weigh 100–160 lbs. Lift with two people to avoid damage or injury.

Recheck the mounting bolts after driving a short distance.

Use lock nuts or security mounting kits if theft is a concern.

Some vehicles may require spacers or mounting rails for proper clearance.
